Oh, dear. Here we go again. With the calendar flipping to a new year, reports of a human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China are sparking questions about the virus and its possible fallout.
Somebody already made a coin for the occasion titled COVID 2025 ($COVID25) on the meme coin platform Pump.fun, and it’s going bananas. Oh, wait, no. It’s been rug-pulled. Lockdown chads wagmi!
There is no official word yet on whether HMPV is behind the growing wave of flu-like illnesses in China, but data from the China CDC paints a troubling picture as the new year looms. The numbers are climbing, sparking questions about what HMPV is and what it might mean in the months ahead.
New China Virus 2025
China’s CDC reports influenza still leads to other respiratory illnesses, claiming 30.2% of late 2024 test results. But HMPV, pulling in 6.2% of positive tests and 5.4% of hospital stays, is edging into a more notorious territory, surpassing COVID-19.
Officials aren’t calling it a nationwide outbreak yet, but the rising flu-like cases and social media freakout suggest a virus people can’t ignore. Time to buy more toilet paper?

Found only two decades ago, HMPV shares its lineage with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), carrying similar symptoms and an outsized risk for kids, seniors, and the immunocompromised.
Like other respiratory viruses, it spreads through droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, close contact, or touching contaminated surfaces and the face. The sobering take across the internet is just an extended seasonal scare. Even China said so. Nothing anomalous…yet.
And the tinfoil hat Alex Jones takes is they’re bringing back COVID lockdowns, and CNN’ll probably start doing its daily death count by the end of the week.

Is there a Polymarket odds maker for a new pandemic? If there is, the odds should be low. Calling HMPV in China a major risk would be CNN levels of gaslighting, but ignoring it isn’t wise either. Keep an eye on the story.
