OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company, plans to introduce a more accessible version of its language model in 2025.
This version will allow users to download and run the model on their own systems. It will give more control to developers compared to previous releases like GPT-3 or GPT-4, which remained closed.
The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, explained in a March 31 post on X that OpenAI had been considering this plan for a while, but other tasks came first.

Altman mentioned that the model will include strong reasoning features. Before the official release, OpenAI plans to collect suggestions from developers.
The company will hold a series of events to gather opinions and test early versions. These sessions are expected to begin in San Francisco, with more planned across Europe and the Asia–Pacific region.
By releasing the “open-weight language model”, OpenAI will let users use, modify, and run the system, though it will not be fully open-source. This step offers more flexibility than its current tools, which are hosted and controlled entirely by OpenAI.
Altman also said OpenAI is interested in seeing how different groups use the tool. Since the model can be modified, OpenAI expects that some users will make changes after the release.
