Perplexity has criticized Amazon after receiving a legal notice asking the company to stop users from making purchases through its artificial intelligence (AI) browser, Comet.
According to Perplexity, Amazon’s message was forceful and aimed at shutting down a feature that helps users shop more easily.
The AI firm explained that its Comet Assistant lets people search for items and buy them on Amazon through a simple request.

However, the company stated that Amazon demanded this function be removed.
Amazon’s aim appears to be limiting how external services interact with its platform.
Perplexity responded by questioning Amazon’s logic. The company argued that helping users complete purchases more smoothly should benefit Amazon.
Instead, Perplexity claimed that Amazon is more focused on showing ads and directing users to promoted products than on improving the shopping experience.
In response, Amazon said third-party tools should clearly state what they are doing and must respect whether a service wants to participate. Amazon claimed Perplexity did not act openly and was trying to work around its restrictions.
The company also said Comet harms the shopping experience by offering less helpful product suggestions that fail to tailor recommendations to the user and sometimes show slower shipping options.
