Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Alan Dye, who has led Apple’s user interface design team, is leaving the company to join Meta.
The decision strengthens Meta’s focus on developing devices like smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. Dye will work on improving how these products use artificial intelligence (AI) and will report directly to Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer.
At Apple, Dye’s position will be filled by Steve Lemay. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Lemay has “had a key role in the design of every major Apple interface since 1999″.

Meta has been hiring from its rivals as it expands its AI and hardware efforts. Earlier this year, the company brought in several researchers from OpenAI.
Reports also mentioned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal recruiting efforts; he once delivered homemade soup to an OpenAI employee, and OpenAI’s Mark Chen said he returned the gesture when approaching Meta staff.
Zuckerberg announced on Threads that Dye would lead a new creative studio within Reality Labs. The group will include former Apple designer Billy Sorrentino, interface design lead Joshua To, industrial design head Pete Bristol, and metaverse design leader Jason Rubin.
Zuckerberg said the new studio will “bring together design, fashion, and technology to define the next generation of our products and experiences”.
