OpenAI has started testing a new feature in ChatGPT that allows several users to chat together with the artificial intelligence (AI) in the same conversation.
This trial is currently running in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
People using the Free, Plus, or Team plans can join these group chats on both the mobile app and the web version. The feature is still in the early stages, and OpenAI said it wants to see how people use it before rolling it out more widely.

Each group chat allows between one and 20 participants. Conversations take place in shared spaces where members can chat with each other and with ChatGPT. Only invited users can join, and anyone in the group can leave at any time.
The assistant used in these chats is GPT‑5.1 Auto. It can answer questions, help with searches, create images, accept file uploads, and take voice input.
OpenAI has said that messages sent within a group do not count toward the AI response limit. Only messages that involve the assistant are counted in the usage limits.
For younger users, extra safety steps are in place. If someone under 18 joins a group chat, filters and parental controls help make sure the experience is safe.
Each group includes a short description, and the chats are organized in a sidebar for easier access. Private chats and stored memories from individual users remain separate from these group conversations.
