xAI integrates Grok as the default voice for Vapi’s 12 core agents, elevating voice AI with natural speech and emotional resonance.
xAI has announced that Grok, its generative AI product suite, is now powering the voice layer for Vapi, a leading voice AI platform. Grok will serve as the default engine for Vapi’s 12 core voices, impacting over 2.5 million voice agents. The integration aims to deliver more natural and emotionally resonant text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities to Vapi users.
This move follows Vapi’s independent blind evaluation, where Grok’s voice technology outperformed competitors, earning the top spot. In public tests, Grok has demonstrated remarkable realism; a recent side-by-side Twitter poll showed 4,500 users evenly split when asked to distinguish between a Grok-generated voice and a human original.
For developers already using Vapi, switching to Grok’s voices is straightforward. The new options are available in the Vapi dashboard, enabling users to experience improved audio quality. Grok’s advanced customization features, including the ability to create custom voice clones from 120 seconds of reference audio, are also accessible via APIs. These capabilities open doors to applications in narration, advertising, podcasts, and beyond.
This partnership underscores xAI’s aggressive expansion into the voice AI market. In April 2026, xAI launched a suite of speech APIs, including speech-to-text and speech-to-speech capabilities. Just last month, the company introduced Grok 4.3, featuring enhanced voice cloning at a competitive price of $3 per hour for speech-to-speech interactions.
While Grok’s technical achievements are drawing attention, xAI also faces scrutiny. A June 3 open letter criticized how the company has managed its relationship with long-time Grok users. Despite these challenges, Grok’s integration into Vapi could solidify its position as a key contender against rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini in the broader generative AI space.
Separately, traders should note the distinction between xAI’s Grok AI product and the GROK cryptocurrency token. GROK, an Ethereum-based meme coin with no official ties to xAI or Elon Musk, trades at $0.0004 as of June 4, 2026, with a market cap of $3.025 million. Despite the unrelated branding, news about Grok AI occasionally stirs minor speculative interest in the token.
For Vapi users, the Grok-powered voices are already live on the platform. Developers outside the Vapi ecosystem can also leverage Grok’s voice technology through direct API integration. With this deployment, xAI continues to push the boundaries of generative AI applications in speech, setting a higher bar for the industry.
