The Daily Breakdown: Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: What Sets Them Apart

The Daily Breakdown drill into Bitcoin and Ethereum to explain what exactly sets the world’s two largest cryptocurrencies apart.

Before we dive in, let’s make sure you’re set to receive The Daily Breakdown each morning. To keep getting our daily insights, all you need to do is log in to your eToro account.

Bitcoin and Ethereum are the two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, but their size is about where the similarities end. Although both rely on blockchain technology, they were created for different purposes and function in very different ways.

Put simply, Bitcoin’s value proposition centers on digital scarcity and monetary adoption. Ethereum centers on the growth of programmable blockchain infrastructure and on-chain economic activity. Understanding that distinction helps explain why the two assets are valued differently — and why their opportunities, risks and potential roles in crypto are not interchangeable.

Deep Dive — Bitcoin

Bitcoin was created in 2009 as a decentralized electronic payment system that could operate without a bank, government or central intermediary. Although it can transfer value, its primary investment narrative now centers on scarcity, security and its potential to serve as a digital store of value.

The Bitcoin network records transactions on a public blockchain. Miners verify those transactions through proof of work, receiving newly issued bitcoin and transaction fees in return. New issuance is reduced approximately every four years through the halving, while Bitcoin’s total supply is permanently capped at 21 million coins.

That scarcity is central to Bitcoin’s investment case. Supporters view BTC as “digital gold” — an asset that cannot be created in response to political pressure, government spending or changing economic conditions. Institutional investment products have also made it increasingly accessible to traditional investors through investment vehicles like ETFs.

Bitcoin does not produce earnings, dividends or native yield. Its price depends on demand for its scarcity, liquidity and perceived monetary value. It can therefore be highly sensitive to financial conditions and investor sentiment.

Its principal risks include regulation, volatility, energy consumption and uncertainty over its long-term financial role. Its proposition is nevertheless focused: Bitcoin is a bet that a scarce, decentralized digital asset can become an increasingly important form of money, collateral or long-term savings.

Deep Dive II — Ethereum

Ethereum was launched in 2015 to expand blockchain technology beyond payments. It differs from Bitcoin in its original purpose: Bitcoin was introduced as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system for transferring value without financial intermediaries, while Ethereum was designed as a programmable platform capable of supporting applications and financial services.

Ethereum accomplishes this through smart contracts — software that automatically executes transactions when specified conditions are met. These contracts support stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, digital collectibles and tokenized real-world assets. Ethereum is therefore less like a single financial product and more like infrastructure for a digital economy.

ETH is the network’s native asset. Users need it to pay transaction fees, while participants can stake ETH to help validate transactions and secure the blockchain in exchange for rewards. ETH is also widely used as collateral across Ethereum-based applications. Bitcoin does not offer an equivalent native staking function.

The assets also have different supply structures. Bitcoin has a permanent limit of 21 million coins, while ETH has no fixed maximum. New ETH is issued to validators, but a portion of transaction fees is permanently removed through burning. Its supply can therefore increase or decrease depending on network activity.

Ethereum’s investment case is tied closely to usage. Demand for ETH may grow if more payments, financial products and tokenized assets move onto Ethereum or connected networks. Its principal risks include technology execution, network security and competition from rival blockchains.
