Perplexity Portable Computer brings local-first AI to Windows PCs with NVIDIA RTX GPUs, enabling powerful on-device workflows without cloud reliance.

Perplexity Portable AI Now on Windows, Powered by NVIDIA RTX

Perplexity AI has launched its Portable Computer feature for Windows PCs, leveraging NVIDIA RTX GPUs to bring powerful local AI workflows to users. The rollout marks a major step in making agentic AI accessible without relying on cloud infrastructure, allowing sensitive tasks to remain on-device.

Originally announced in August 2026, Perplexity Portable Computer is a local-first version of Perplexity Computer, designed to carry out complex multistep tasks directly on a user’s machine. The Windows release extends support beyond NVIDIA DGX Spark systems and Linux RTX PCs, significantly broadening its reach. Compatible hardware includes GeForce RTX GPUs and NVIDIA RTX PRO Workstations with at least 24GB of VRAM.

Why Local AI Matters

Unlike traditional AI systems that depend heavily on cloud-based resources, Portable Computer uses local models to analyze and orchestrate tasks. This approach minimizes the need to upload sensitive data to external servers, enhancing privacy and security. Local execution also eliminates the consumption of Perplexity Computer credits for on-device tasks, a cost-saving feature for frequent users.

The system integrates seamlessly with existing tools and platforms, supporting connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, GitHub, and more. For example, engineers can use it to review pull requests in GitHub, while finance professionals can trace recurring fees in brokerage summaries. Startups might analyze user funnel data locally, all without exposing documents to external networks.

NVIDIA RTX Acceleration

At the core of this offering is NVIDIA’s RTX GPU technology, which accelerates local AI models like Qwen 3.8 27B. These models are optimized for RTX hardware, enabling high-performance computing without requiring users to handle complex configuration setups. When tasks demand advanced reasoning, the system can escalate specific parts to the cloud, but only with user consent. This hybrid model strikes a balance between local efficiency and cloud capabilities.

Market Context and Industry Implications

The broader shift toward local-first AI reflects a growing demand for privacy and cost control in enterprise and personal computing. Portable Computer’s ability to operate independently of cloud infrastructure aligns with trends favoring decentralized computing solutions. NVIDIA’s involvement underscores the role of high-performance GPUs in driving these innovations, particularly as competitors like AMD and Intel ramp up their AI-focused offerings.

While Perplexity Portable Computer is not a standalone tradeable asset, its release could indirectly benefit NVIDIA by increasing demand for RTX GPUs. NVIDIA has already seen significant traction with its AI-focused hardware, and integration into platforms like Perplexity only strengthens its position in the AI hardware market.

What’s Next?

Perplexity AI plans to expand hardware compatibility further, with support for NVIDIA DGX Station expected in the near future. As local-first AI adoption grows, the integration of more advanced models, including NVIDIA’s upcoming Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, could enhance the system’s capabilities even further.

Users interested in deploying Portable Computer on Windows can start today, provided they have compatible RTX GPUs. This launch represents a significant step in making advanced, privacy-first AI accessible to a wider audience.
