Fornelli, located in Italy’s Molise region, has announced plans to build a monument honoring Satoshi Nakamoto—the name used by the person or group who created Bitcoin
On April 23, Fornelli’s local government shared on Facebook that the statue will be revealed on May 1. The monument was designed by artist Mattia Pannoni and funded entirely by the town’s administration. No other details about the sculpture—such as its shape or size—have been made public yet.
Fornelli’s mayor, Giovanni Tedeschi, said the decision reflects the town’s support for young people and new ideas. He also emphasized the importance of keeping up with changes in technology and how they shape society.

Local officials say that Fornelli has the highest rate of Bitcoin use in the world, considering its small population of about 1,800. While external sources have not confirmed this claim, the town appears to be embracing digital currency more than most.
Officials hope the statue will not only recognize Bitcoin’s creator but also help attract visitors and bring attention to the town.
The figure behind the name Satoshi Nakamoto has never been confirmed. Since publishing the Bitcoin white paper in 2008, Nakamoto has remained anonymous.
