Meta Pumps a Further $50 Million into Horizon Metaverse

This week, following its $100 billion spending milestone on XR technologies, ranging from MR headsets to AR smart glasses, and Metaverse ambitions, Meta dropped a $50 million Creator Fund program to entice news services, brands, and developers to the Metaverse platform.

Followings its billions in spending, $50 million may seem like a drip in the bucket, however, the continued monetary faith in the Horizon Metaverse platform may mark the start of a second-wind for Meta’s vision of online interaction.

While the Horizon Metaverse is primarily aimed at consumers and gamers in its current state, with enterprise-facing solutions like Workrooms closing down years ago, the continued investment and drive for brand exploration on Horizon means avid XR champions should be keen to note what is happening.

Moreover, Meta’s $50 million Creator Fund is targeting smartphone-based content this year. The firm keenly notes the importance of cross-device interoperability across mobile hardware, a key growth area for XR devices and services across the market.

More on Meta’s Fresh $50 Mill Investment

Meta’s $50 million Creator Fund aims to push budding platform developers toward creating Horizon content that entices a broader market variety than the platform already has.

As mentioned, a large portion of that effort comes from Meta attempting to reach smartphone Horizon users, an apparent move to entice users to the Quest portfolio after experiencing a lite version of the platform.

Meta said in an official statement:

By investing in mobile content, we can reach a lot of new people who don’t yet own a Quest headset and ultimately grow the pie for everyone. That’s why, as part of our $50 million Creator Fund for creators of mobile and MR worlds, we’re also announcing our first creator competition of the year with a focus on mobile.

Moreover, the Creator Fund is an opportunity for creators to “build your business” on the platform via a Meta Horizon Creator Program that aims to provide resources for creators in the US, UK, and Canada.

However, now, the revamped Meta Horizon Creator Program is expanding to various new regions, seemingly in an attempt to reach new worldwide developers.

The Meta Horizon Creator Program’s regional support now includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan.

Meta Connect will occur later this year, and following an internal campaign to be frontrunners in XR, this Creator Fund could highlight bright prospects for Metaverse news at the yearly vendor event, which comes after a period of silence on the Metaerse from its loudest champion.

The Metaverse is Coming Back! – According to Meta

The news comes after Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “This is also going to be a pivotal year for the metaverse,” following the $100 billion spending landmark.

Zuckerberg explained:

The number of people using Quest and Horizon has been steadily growing — and this is the year when a number of long-term investments that we’ve been working on that will make the metaverse more visually stunning and inspiring will really start to land. I think we’re going to know a lot more about Horizon’s trajectory by the end of this year.

In closing, Zuckerberg explained that Meta is accelerating its efforts towards building “some awesome things that shape the future of human connection. As always, I’m grateful for everyone who is on this journey with us.”

Additionally, Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, informed Meta employees that 2025 will be significant, “the most critical year in my 8 years at Reality Labs.”

Speaking on the metaverse and Horizon Worlds, Boz explained that the service’s mobile application “absolutely has to break out for our long-term plans to have a chance. ” also remarking, “If you don’t feel the weight of history on you, then you aren’t paying attention.”

Boz added:

This year likely determines whether this entire effort will go down as the work of visionaries or a legendary misadventure-We haven’t actually made a dent in the world yet.

Speaking on the billions Meta has invested in XR, Boz reflected that “we live in an incredible time of technological achievement and have placed ourselves at the center of it with our investments. There is a very good chance most of us will never get a chance like this again.”
