Natasha Lyonne will direct and star in a new science fiction film called Uncanny Valley, which will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and human creativity can overlap.
According to a report by Variety, Lyonne will work alongside actress and filmmaker Brit Marling and technology writer Jaron Lanier.
The film follows Lyonne’s past efforts to encourage stronger rules for using AI in entertainment. In 2023, she joined over 1,000 Writers Guild of America members in asking for clearer protections when AI tools are used in the industry.

The story centers on Mila, a teenager whose sense of what’s real starts to break down after she becomes deeply involved in an open-world, augmented reality game. As the game mixes the digital and physical worlds, Mila’s understanding of her surroundings becomes less clear.
The production will use generative AI to help create the film’s visuals. Toronto-based AI company MoonValley and Los Angeles-based Asteria Film Co. will provide this technology.
Lyonne explained that while AI can help filmmakers achieve larger creative goals, it also brings challenges. She said, “AI can enable bigger visions onscreen—but we must also grapple with its myriad complexities surrounding artists’ rights”.
Lanier shared that although the film includes themes about technology, its main focus will be on people. He said the story is really about human relationships and the ways people stay connected across different times, tools, and experiences.
The movie is still in the early stages of development, and no release date has been announced.
