Dec. 20 (Crypto-News.Net) – Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of collapsed crypto exchange FTX, has taken on a new role as an informal legal advisor to fellow inmates at a federal prison in California, providing guidance to high-profile prisoners including former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump this month.
The FTX founder encouraged Hernández to testify in his own defense during his March 2024 drug trafficking trial, according to The New York Times. Hernández followed that advice and took the stand on March 5-6, 2024. Trump formally pardoned the former president on Dec. 1, releasing him from a 45-year sentence for facilitating the transport of over 400 tons of cocaine.
Bankman-Fried also served as a sounding board for music producer Sean Combs during his trial, helping him prepare for his defense. Combs was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges on July 2 but found guilty on two counts of transportation for purposes of prostitution.
Critics Question Practice
Federal public defender Sabrina Shroff criticized the practice of inmates providing legal advice, describing jailhouse lawyers as a concerning and unwelcome addition to the legal system.
Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence after his conviction on fraud charges related to the FTX collapse. Courts ordered him to pay $11 billion in restitution. He stated that federal defense standards are inadequate and that he offers guidance where public defenders face overwhelming caseloads.
Pardon Efforts Continue
His parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, have been lobbying Trump allies for a presidential pardon for their son. The Trump administration’s approach to crypto enforcement has drawn scrutiny as the president issues pardons while reshaping regulatory policy. The elder Bankman said his son now only has his time to offer others.
Bankman-Fried remains at FCI Terminal Island in California while pursuing his appeal.
