Founded in 1925, Caterpillar is the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment, while also producing engines, turbines and power-generation systems. Its machines help build infrastructure, mine materials and power industrial operations. CAT is increasingly tied to AI on several fronts: AI and autonomy are making its equipment smarter, while the data-center buildout is creating demand for Caterpillar equipment to help construct facilities and, more importantly, for its generators and turbines to supply the enormous amount of power they require.
While its business can be cyclical at times, Caterpillar’s dividend has been more consistent. It has paid a cash dividend every year since its formation more than a century ago and has raised its annual dividend for 32 straight years.
Given the stock’s stellar performance — up 108% over the past year, 201% over the past three years, and 291% over the past five years — the dividend yield now sits at just 0.75%.
Future Growth Projections
When it comes to Caterpillar’s business, revenue has trended steadily higher and is expected to keep growing through 2028. At the same time, its margin profile has improved significantly over the past decade, with operating margins rebounding to 17.5% after dipping in 2025.
According to Bloomberg, analysts project the following:
- Earnings Growth: 40.6% in 2026, 19.7% in 2027, and 19% in 2028
- Revenue Growth: 18.4% in 2026, 11.6% in 2027, and 10.6% in 2028
Analysts currently have a consensus price target of ~$1,006 on CAT stock, implying about 18% upside to today’s stock price.

Diving Deeper — Valuation
Analysts expect double-digit earnings and revenue growth, with earnings growth well outpacing revenue growth, which points to favorable margin expectations. Investors have been willing to pay a higher valuation as a result, with Caterpillar’s forward P/E recently hitting a 10-year high. Notably, its PEG ratio — which compares P/E with expected earnings growth — remains more subdued thanks to Caterpillar’s strong earnings growth profile.

Caterpillar’s biggest risk is its cyclical exposure, as weaker construction, mining, energy, or infrastructure spending can quickly pressure equipment demand. Commodity-price swings, tariffs, supply-chain disruptions, higher costs, and credit losses at Cat Financial are also key risks. Valuation matters too: if shares are pricing in strong growth and margin expansion, any slowdown in earnings or end-market demand could trigger multiple compression even if the underlying business remains healthy.

Caterpillar combines a century-old industrial franchise with newer growth drivers tied to infrastructure, power generation, automation, and AI-related data-center demand. Strong earnings growth and improving margins help support the bull case, even after a major run in the stock.
The bear case centers on cyclicality and valuation. If construction, mining, or energy demand weakens — or earnings growth falls short — Caterpillar’s elevated P/E could leave shares vulnerable to further multiple compression.
