Four Armed Men Tie up Family in French Crypto Home Invasion – Bitcoin News

Key Takeaways

  • The national news outlet La Voix du Nord reports that four armed men stole €40,000 in crypto during a two-hour home invasion in Vendin-le-Vieil.
  • France now accounts for roughly 80% of documented physical crypto attacks in Europe.
  • The French Anti-Cybercrime Office is tracing the €40,000 to find how the crew picked targets.

La Voix du Nord, the daily newspaper for northern France, disclosed that a group of four men dressed in black forced their way through the front door of a family home at 4 a.m., carrying at least a knife and an iron bar. Le Parisien confirmed the report and noted that the kidnappers bound the couple and their two young children with black tape, separating the father while placing the mother and kids under guard.

For the next two hours, the attackers reportedly punched and threatened the father until he handed over his account codes and login details to transfer roughly €40,000 in cryptocurrency. Then they vanished. By the time firefighters found the family in shock around 7 a.m., the digital money was gone. The terrifying part is not just that this happened. The problem is that it keeps happening, and almost entirely in one country.

A Calculated Midnight Strike

The attack in the small town of Vendin-le-Vieil arrived completely out of the blue. The targets were a 40-year-old information technology (IT) specialist who works in cryptocurrency, his 41-year-old partner, and their two children, aged 12 and eight.

Once inside, the four hooded men executed a clearly planned operation. They taped the family, isolated the father, and demanded access to his digital wealth. The violence was explicit. Reports say the 12-year-old girl was struck in the head with car keys to wake her up, and the father was beaten until he initiated the transfer.

The Remote Control Coordinator

That brings us to the strangest detail of the September invasion. The men in the house were not working alone. According to local reporting, the four attackers stayed on the phone with a fifth person for the entire duration of the robbery, which lasted anywhere from two to three hours. They allegedly spoke Arabic specifically so the captive family could not understand their communications.

The setup suggests a highly organized structure, with muscle on the ground acting on instructions from a remote coordinator who likely verified the digital transfer in real time. Officials call these physical extortions “cryptorapts.” It is a brutal analogue solution to a digital problem. Instead of writing complex malware, a crew uses the victim’s own children as leverage to make the owner sign the transaction willingly. Once the blocks confirm the transfer, the attackers flee.

The European Epicenter

The numbers get pretty wild when looking at the broader picture. France has quietly become the undisputed capital of physical crypto attacks in Europe. Independent trackers estimate the country accounts for roughly 80 percent of documented European physical attacks.

The trend is actively picking up steam. French police logged 135 crypto-linked incidents since 2023. While 2024 saw 18 cases, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed authorities recorded 77 cases in just the first half of 2026. Eighty-eight people, including minors, have been charged across various active cases. Police have noted that repeat names across files point directly to structured networks rather than isolated local gangs.

Now the investigation splits into two distinct paths. Local judicial police handle the physical home invasion, while the French Anti-Cybercrime Office traces the money on the blockchain. The €40,000 haul is relatively small compared to other recent French ransoms that ran into the millions, but the method remains identical. As the dust settles in Vendin-le-Vieil, the biggest unanswered question is how the attackers selected this specific house.

The Missing Link

Authorities have not released the name of the stolen crypto asset, the destination wallet, or the identities of the suspects. But the core mystery is targeting. Investigators still need to figure out how a violent crew knew a father in northern France held digital assets in the first place.

Whether the leak came from a compromised customer database, a social media post, or a paid target list, someone pointed the attackers at that front door. Until police find that missing link, anyone holding digital wealth in the country might feel like they are walking a tightrope.
