That Rusty Cast Iron Skillet at a Garage Sale Could Be Worth Up to $3,000

Key Takeaways

  • Most vintage cast iron sells for modest sums, but a narrow set of brand markings and sizes can push a skillet into four-figure territory.
  • One short-lived Griswold logo is so scarce that collectors believe only a small number of legible examples survive today.
  • An oddball skillet size, produced in limited numbers partly due to superstition, keeps drawing big bids at recent auctions.

The dusty cast-iron pan sitting under a folding table at a garage sale is usually a $20 to $75 problem, not a payday. But collectors will pay real money for the right names stamped on the bottom, especially Griswold from Erie, Pennsylvania and its longtime rival Wagner out of Sidney, Ohio. The tells can be surprisingly specific: an early “ERIE” mark, the famously scarce Erie Spider logo from around 1890 to 1891, or a genuinely rare No. 13 size that has pushed into the $1,500 to $3,000 range at auction. It is the kind of niche that turns a quick glance at a rusty skillet into a slow flip, a closer read, and maybe a very different checkout total.

A surprising treasure in cast iron cookware

The next time you’re scanning a garage sale table, that heavy, rust-stained skillet might be more than weekend-project clutter. A narrow slice of vintage American cast iron, especially pieces tied to Griswold Manufacturing and its longtime rival Wagner Manufacturing, can climb into the thousands once the markings and sizes line up. Most pans won’t, but a few very specific ones still do.

Collectors have a simple rule of thumb: common vintage sizes often trade like ordinary kitchen gear, while rare logos and oddball sizes behave more like scarce memorabilia. That difference is why everyday skillets, including typical Griswold and Wagner pieces, often land between $20 and $400, while the outliers can reach $1,500 to $3,000 and beyond, especially at auction.

Griswold vs. Wagner: an American manufacturing rivalry

Griswold Manufacturing operated out of Erie, Pennsylvania, and dominated American cast iron cookware for much of the 20th century, with Wagner Manufacturing based in Sidney, Ohio as its main competitor. Those foundry origins matter because the brand names, patterns, and logos are exactly what today’s buyers hunt for when a pan shows up on a folding table with no story attached.

The most coveted Griswold mark is the “Erie Spider”, a spider-on-a-web trademark used briefly around 1890 to 1891, as detailed in the Erie Spider trademark archive. It’s not just rare, it’s fragile: collectors estimate fewer than roughly 200 legible spider-logo skillets survive because the raised emblem could wear down over decades of stovetop contact.

The No. 13 skillet: why a “14-inch” pan becomes a 4-figure collectible

Then there’s the famed Griswold No. 13, a 14-inch skillet that became genuinely scarce in part because of superstition around the number 13, plus its awkward position between the more common No. 12 and No. 14 sizes. Fewer made it out the door, and now that production quirk shows up plainly in auction results.

At the February 2025 Air Works Consignment Auction, a Griswold No. 13 large-block-logo skillet with heat ring, pattern 716, sold for $3,300, while a No. 13 slant-logo skillet with heat ring, pattern 720, sold for $2,600, per the pattern numbers guide. Later, a November 2025 collector auction in Montgomery, Indiana saw a No. 13 large-block-logo hammer at $3,200 and a slant-logo No. 13 at $2,400.

What to look for at a garage sale

Spotting value is less about shine and more about signals: logo era, pattern number, heat ring details, and the kind of size stamp most sellers never notice. The upside is real. An authentic spider-logo Griswold skillet sold for $10,000 at auction in August 2024, one of the strongest documented prices in this niche, according to auction pricing summaries.

And Griswold isn’t the only brand with a “13” story. A Wagner Ware “Sidney -O-” No. 13 skillet sold for about $949 at a 2024 auction, a reminder that the best garage-sale finds usually start with 2 questions: what’s the mark, and what’s the size?
