An example of AI’s role in wildfire detection is the ALERT California system, designed by researchers at the University of California San Diego. This system uses thousands of cameras placed throughout the state to monitor fire activity.
Powered by machine learning, the cameras analyze data to detect fires and send alerts to emergency teams.
The ALERT California system was used when a vegetation fire was detected in Irvine, CA. The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) shared footage of the incident on a January 4 post on X, which highlighted how the system identified the fire quickly.
This system includes a network of over 1,000 cameras. When a possible fire is detected, the footage is reviewed by monitoring teams who work around the clock. These teams decide whether the fire needs to be reported to local firefighting agencies.
