Michael Saylor Teases Strategy’s Next Bitcoin Move After Buying Pause and $3 Billion Cash Buildup

Key Takeaways

  • Saylor’s “What’s next?” post showed the company’s 843,775 BTC position but did not disclose a new transaction.
  • Strategy raised $466.7 million through common-stock sales and increased its cash reserve to $3 billion during the week ended July 12.
  • Recent bitcoin sales and 20.4 months of dividend coverage have expanded the company’s options for meeting preferred-stock obligations.

Saylor’s Bitcoin Chart Arrives With Strategy’s Next Move Unclear

Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) could resume bitcoin purchases after a buying pause, continue preserving cash or leave its bitcoin and cash positions unchanged. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor’s “What’s next?” post on July 19 showed the company’s acquisition history and current holdings, but it did not indicate a new transaction, funding source or additional purchase.

The chart posted on X showed the company holding 843,775 BTC, equal to about 4.02% of bitcoin’s fixed supply. At the market price of $64,312, the position was valued at approximately $54.28 billion. Its aggregate purchase cost was about $63.83 billion, with an average acquisition price of $75,653.

Recent performance differed from the company’s year-to-date results. Strategy’s dashboard showed a quarterly BTC yield of negative 1.6%, a quarterly BTC loss of 13,200 and a dollar-denominated BTC loss of $849 million. Year-to-date figures remained positive, including a 6.6% BTC yield, a gain of 44,000 BTC and a dollar-denominated BTC gain of $2.84 billion.

Saylor has described corporate bitcoin adoption as “necessary, inevitable, and welcome” for the asset’s development as a global monetary network. As of July 18, 197 public companies held approximately 1.263 million BTC, with the company accounting for about 66.8% of that total. Its treasury decisions therefore carry unusual weight within the public-company bitcoin market.

Strategy Raises Cash While Bitcoin Holdings Remain Unchanged

No bitcoin acquisition was reported between July 6 and July 12, leaving Strategy’s BTC holdings unchanged at 843,775 BTC. The company has not purchased bitcoin since June 22. During the latest reporting week, it sold 4,818,781 shares of MSTR common stock and generated $466.7 million in net proceeds.

Part of those proceeds increased the U.S. dollar reserve by $450 million, bringing the balance to $3 billion as of July 12. The reserve included proceeds from stock sales that had not settled by the reporting date.

The $3 billion reserve provides 20.4 months of coverage against $1.763 billion in annual preferred-stock dividend obligations, according to company figures. The reserve is also intended to support interest payments on outstanding debt.

The larger dollar reserve reduces the company’s dependence on immediate financing or bitcoin sales when scheduled payments come due. Recent disclosures also show that equity proceeds are being used to strengthen liquidity rather than being directed automatically into additional bitcoin purchases.

Bitcoin Sales Expand Strategy’s Treasury Options

Between May 26 and May 31, the company sold 32 BTC for approximately $2.5 million at an average price of $77,135. Strategy said the proceeds would help fund preferred-stock dividends, while common-stock sales during the same period raised another $128.3 million. It was the company’s first disclosed bitcoin sale since a tax-related disposal in December 2022.

On July 6, Strategy disclosed that it had sold another 3,588 BTC for approximately $216 million on July 5, reducing its bitcoin holdings to 843,775 BTC. Saylor said the funds covered quarterly and monthly dividend payments. The company held $2.55 billion in cash after the transaction before increasing the reserve to $3 billion the following week.

Bitfinex analysts said Strategy’s authorization to sell as much as $1.25 billion in bitcoin gives the company a defined mechanism for managing liquidity. They argued that advance authorization reduces the risk that a compressed market-value-to-net-asset-value ratio could force dilutive equity issuance or an unplanned bitcoin sale. The framework also gives the bitcoin holdings a broader role in the company’s treasury operations beyond long-term accumulation.

The next treasury and financing disclosure will show whether Saylor’s July 19 post was followed by a transaction. A purchase would end the pause that began after June 22, while an unchanged balance would extend the company’s recent focus on cash coverage. Any additional sale would show how management is balancing its bitcoin holdings against recurring financial obligations.
