Deep Dive

Marvell is a semiconductor company that designs the chips and connectivity technology used across data centers, networking, storage, and communications infrastructure. Its products help servers, processors, storage systems, and networks move and manage enormous amounts of data efficiently.

That makes Marvell increasingly important to AI. Large AI systems require more than powerful processors; they also need custom chips, high-speed Ethernet switches, optical connections, and data-center interconnects to link thousands of components together. As AI infrastructure expands, demand is rising for the technologies that keep those systems connected, making Marvell a key supplier behind the broader AI buildout.

Marvell has been somewhat of a “quiet compounder,” with shares rising more than 660% from 2015 through 2024. Yet it has not received the same recognition as semiconductor peers such as Advanced Micro Devices, Nvidia, and Broadcom.

AI is now acting as a catalyst — and the market is responding. On March 6, shares jumped 18% after the company reported mostly in-line results but issued guidance that reset investor expectations. The stock rallied another 250% from there, with further momentum arriving after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised the company on June 2.

Future Growth Projections

Growth expectations have been trending higher for Marvell. As shown below, projected earnings growth outpaces revenue growth, which could support margin expansion, while free cash flow is expected to grow even faster than both metrics.

Marvell is currently operating in fiscal 2027. According to Bloomberg, analysts project:

    • Earnings Growth: 42.4% in 2027, 54.9% in 2028, and 51% in 2029
    • Revenue Growth: 40.6% in 2027, 45.7% in 2028, and 42.4% in 2029
  • Free Cash Flow: 102% in 2027, 66.8% in 208, and 57.9% in 2029.

Analysts currently have a consensus price target of ~$271 on MRVL stock, implying about 50% upside to today’s stock price.

Diving Deeper — Valuation

Despite the recent volatility, shares remain up more than 100% year to date. Those sharp price swings have also led to significant changes in the stock’s valuation:

Before its second-quarter surge, MRVL traded in the low-20s on a forward P/E basis, an area that had provided support over the past five years. The multiple recently climbed above 65 times before retreating to roughly 40 times. While still elevated, it is far less extreme. With 45 to 50 times acting as a long-term ceiling, investors must decide whether the recent pullback offers enough value.

Its PEG ratio, which adjusts P/E for earnings growth, is a more reasonable 1.25. A reading near 1 is often viewed as valuation roughly in line with growth, although the metric depends heavily on the earnings forecast and should not be considered in isolation.

Cash flow is also strengthening. In the latest quarter, cash and equivalents more than quadrupled to $3.8 billion from $886 million a year earlier, while net debt fell by two-thirds to $1.1 billion.

Risks

Marvell’s biggest risks include its reliance on a small number of large customers, particularly as AI-related sales become a larger part of the business. A slowdown in hyperscaler spending, delayed custom-chip programs, or stronger competition could weigh on growth. The company also faces semiconductor-cycle volatility, supply-chain dependence, export restrictions, and execution risk.

The Bottom Line

Marvell’s role in AI infrastructure gives bulls a compelling growth case. Its strength in custom chips, optical connectivity, and networking could support rapid earnings and cash flow growth, while its improving balance sheet provides additional support.

Bears may focus on the stock’s still-elevated valuation, heavy exposure to data-center spending, and reliance on a small group of large customers. Any slowdown in AI investment or execution setbacks could pressure growth expectations and the share price.
