MoneyGram Launches Stablecoin Card in Colombia, Bringing Crypto Payments to 60M Users

Key Takeaways:

  • MoneyGram has unveiled a stablecoin-based Visa card that will begin in Colombia with a digital launch.
  • Stable-dollar balances can be used for online, conversion in-store and on Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
  • The card is launched with Rain’s payment system, Crossmint’s wallet tech, and the stellar network, with a global expansion planned.

MoneyGram is taking its stablecoins a step closer to real-word payment with the launch of a card that adds digital-dollar balances to every purchase. The launch comes as part of the company’s rising efforts to move towards a new approach to transferring money based on the blockchain.

Meet the MoneyGram Card.

A stablecoin-backed card built to give customers more freedom to hold, access and spend their money, all within the MoneyGram experience they already know.

MoneyGram Turns Stablecoin Balances Into Everyday Spending

The MoneyGram Card is engineered to facilitate the ability to instantaneously convert a stable-dollar account into a stable-dollar expenditure by a card’s owner who’s eligible.

At release in Colombia, the digital card will be offered. It can be accessed and managed via the MoneyGram app, which users will not need to switch to a new card platform to access.

The card can be included into Google Wallet or Apple Wallet for regular purchases. It can then be used to make tap-to-pay payments as well as spending online and with merchants who accept Visa payments.

MoneyGram is taking this practice with a grain of salt too. Users requiring physical currency may move money from their MoneyGram balance to pick up their local currency from a nearby MoneyGram location.

Stellar and Rain Power the Crypto Payment Layer

Several crypto payment infrastructure aspects are seen in the card. The stablecoin card infrastructure will be provided by Rain and the wallet capabilities will be provided by Crossmint. The blockchain layer that’s connecting the digital-dollar experience to the overall MoneyGram ecosystem is called the Stellar network.

MoneyGram is launching this together with its stablecoin in U.S. dollars, which was launched in June as MGUSD natively on Stellar. MoneyGram announced that it would use MGUSD as a key element of its financial services and cross-border payments blockchain strategy.

However, MoneyGram has also started to get more involved than just in Stellar. The company subsequently became an active member of the Solana network in the month of June, which made it yet another big blockchain network to its crypto playbook.

MoneyGram Starts in Colombia Before Global Expansion

The MoneyGram Card is the first market to launch, and additional markets will follow in the next couple of months.

MoneyGram anticipates releasing a physical card in the second half of 2026 as well. The move will enable in-person purchases and cash-out from ATMs, bringing the stablecoin payment experience beyond wallets.

The deployment is also a continuation of MoneyGram’s current presence in Latin America as a stablecoin provider. The company had previously introduced its stablecoin balance in Colombia, where the holders can load cash, hold digital dollars and cash out using the company’s network.

Now MoneyGram has more than 60 million active customers in over 200 countries and territories, with almost 500,000 retail outlets. This established network brings their stablecoins a first-hand connection to blockchain-balances and conventional money access.
