Don’t Let the AI Race Distract You From Your Team’s Performance

Key Takeaways

  • Leaders need to understand the difference between AI and human productivity.
  • AI is already being normalized in the workplace. Successfully pairing it with human workforces is the next step leaders should have on their radar.
  • Leaders need to stop seeing the AI/human combination as a way to use computers to get “more.” Start seeing it as a way to use humans to make that “more” better.

Everyone is in an unavoidable race to develop, deploy and integrate AI solutions that give their business operations an edge. The difficulty, at this point, is that AI is available to everyone. Yes, one person can use it more efficiently than the next, but as a new generation of AI-native workers enters the workforce, the “we use AI better than the next guy” advantage is shrinking.

Thoughtful leaders should be using AI, but while it can automate tasks, it can’t eliminate distractions, improve conversations or change how people experience the spaces where they work. As this new digital transformation charges ahead, many teams are overlooking the physical environments that quietly shape their human performance each day.

When you step back, it’s easy to see that AI adoption is no longer the game-changing factor it once was. Instead, workplace design is the next competitive differentiator that will help human teams amplify their AI outputs the best.

AI and workplace design solve different problems

AI has many functions and the list of its capabilities is growing all the time. It’s hyper-efficient. It’s good at synthesizing data. It’s cost-effective and can scale without much trouble.

But it is still software. It’s controlled by algorithms. It’s trapped in a machine (even the “Cloud” has to run off physical data centers). That means it can’t address many of the physical human needs in the workplace like when it comes to how people operate and collaborate.

The growing value of human concentration and communication

As AI advances, the computing power of the human brain is the part of the equation that is starting to become a deciding factor. The speed (or lack thereof) at which humans can use AI can quickly become a limiting factor in its impact.

The struggle is that it isn’t digital computing power but physical environments that have the most influence on cognitive performance. For instance, Harvard School of Public Health found that simple things like better indoor air quality can affect cognition and, by extension, productivity.

Something like office air pollution isn’t a factor that Claude can compute, or Gemini can jerry-rig. It requires physical solutions and a human mind to design, create and deploy.

It’s important to shift mindsets here when it comes to office environments. Buying that air purifier, for example, isn’t just a health benefit carried over from the past few years of safe distancing. It’s a chance to improve the thinking and performance of your team.

That’s your first step. Stop seeing basic office environmental things like better lighting or cleaner air and water as fundamental requirements. Look at them as investments that give you an edge.

Why leading organizations are investing in overlooked competitive advantages

It’s essential that leaders realize how the advantages are shifting. Three years ago, using AI when a competitor wasn’t doing so was a clear advantage. Now, everyone has AI, but those with the best human work environments have the best chance at creating a synergistic advantage through the combination of their machine and human elements.

Investing in overlooked competitive advantages like clean air, low sound, better lighting and other workplace design elements can help:

  • Improve focus and reduce distractions
  • Strengthen collaboration through purposeful spatial design
  • Support well-being and subsequent productivity
  • Bolster employee satisfaction and, thus, loyalty and retention
  • Create a talent magnet through a more desirable workplace

All of these are more than employee benefits. They are competitive advantages that increase performance through environments that are not just AI-powered but are also human-aligned.

The key is finding ways to incorporate human advantages in a workspace that are as low-lift as possible. Take sound as an example. How loud or “noisy” a space is will impact people’s concentration. What makes a space “noisy” is something called reverberation time, explains RPG Acoustical System, which is the amount of time it takes for sound waves to get below certain decibels. The longer it takes, the noisier a room sounds.

Leaders can take this into consideration when designing or arranging workspaces. They can make sound waves decrease more quickly through the use of sound-absorbing elements, such as rugs or fabrics hung on the wall, wood furniture pieces and drop ceilings.

Work quality is the new benchmark

AI in the workplace is about more than productivity. Artificial intelligence is hyper-productive in a way that humans are just starting to comprehend. It can produce at such a prodigious level that, in most areas of work, the need to have more output won’t be the problem moving forward.

Instead, employers should be designing workplaces that support better work. As machines crank up the output in nearly every work environment, the offices with the highest-performing human workers will have the best chance of producing the highest-quality work. This makes optimizing human cognition and collaboration a priority.

It is an advantage that few leaders are thinking about as everyone races to invest more in the latest AI solutions. Don’t stop investing in AI, but start thinking about your human workers again, too. Investing in overlooked areas like workplace design can be the quiet way to give yourself an advantage in the AI/human world that is unfolding.
